Before you buy a used electric car, it pays to understand how it charges — the connectors, the speeds, and why charging slows near full. Here is what matters, and what to check.

Buying a used electric car brings a set of questions a petrol buyer never has to ask, and most of them come down to charging. How the car charges, how fast, with which connector and how that changes as the battery fills all affect how easily it will fit your life — and a couple of them affect whether a given used car is the right one to buy at all. A little understanding here prevents the most common disappointments of used-EV ownership.

AC and DC: two kinds of charging
There are two charging families, and the difference explains almost everything about speed. Alternating-current charging, used for home and slower public charging, is converted to direct current by the car's onboard charger before it reaches the battery, and that onboard charger sets a ceiling on how fast AC charging can go. Direct-current rapid charging, by contrast, feeds the battery directly and bypasses the onboard charger, which is why it is so much faster.
For a used buyer this matters because the two are suited to different uses. AC charging from a home wallbox is for overnight top-ups, where speed does not matter; DC rapid charging is for longer journeys, where a quick boost is the point. A car's usefulness depends on it handling both well, which is part of what an inspection considers.

Connector standards
In Europe the connectors have largely settled. Type 2, sometimes called Mennekes, is the universal AC plug used at home and on slower public chargers. CCS, the Combined Charging System, adds two DC pins below the Type 2 connector and is the European DC rapid standard, capable of very high power. CHAdeMO is an older Japanese DC standard found on some early electric cars, and it is being phased out, now a small and shrinking share of European rapid chargers.
The practical point for a buyer is that there is no convenient adapter between CCS and CHAdeMO, so a CHAdeMO-only used car can find motorway rapid charging harder as the network shifts to CCS. The charge curve and home versus public
A used-EV buyer should understand the charge curve. A battery does not charge at a constant rate; the management system deliberately tapers the power near full to control cell voltage, heat and balancing, so the fastest part of a rapid charge is the band from roughly twenty to eighty per cent, while the last stretch from eighty to a hundred can take as long as the whole earlier part. This is why public rapid sessions are usually planned to about eighty per cent rather than full.
Maximum charging speed also varies a great deal by model, from modest to very high, and a charger rated higher than the car can accept will not charge it any faster than the car's own ceiling. For home charging, a wallbox suits overnight top-ups, while public rapid chargers are for journeys — and many cars precondition the battery to an optimal temperature so it can accept full speed, which a cold battery cannot.
What a buyer should check
Beyond the battery's state of health, which deserves its own measurement, there are charging-specific checks worth making on a used EV. We confirm the inlet type — Type 2 with CCS, or a legacy CHAdeMO — so you know how the car will fare on the rapid network. We check that the supplied cables are present, since the Type 2 AC cable is essential and the domestic three-pin cable is often optional and may be missing.
We also look at how the car behaves on a charger where we can, since a battery that throttles or errors under rapid charging is signalling trouble that a range figure alone will never reveal. Together with a battery health reading, these checks tell you whether a used EV will charge the way you need it to, rather than leaving you to discover its limits after you have bought it.
