When you buy a used petrol car, the engine is replaceable for a manageable sum if the worst happens. When you buy a used electric car, the battery often is not — it is the most expensive component by a wide margin, and its condition dictates both how the car drives and what it is worth. Yet its true state is invisible to anyone relying on a test drive and a glance at the range display. That gap is where used-EV buyers get caught.

The good news is that the battery does keep records, and with the right tools those records can be read. Understanding state of health, and insisting on measuring it, transforms a used EV purchase from a risk into an informed decision.

What state of health actually means

State of health, usually shortened to SoH, is a percentage that expresses how much of a battery's original usable capacity remains. A brand-new pack is, in effect, at one hundred per cent; as the battery ages and is used, that figure gradually declines. A car at ninety per cent has lost a tenth of its original capacity; one at seventy per cent has lost nearly a third, and with it a meaningful slice of its range.

Crucially, two identical models of the same age can have very different state-of-health figures, depending on climate, how they were charged and how hard they were used. The badge and the year on the documents tell you almost nothing about this — only the battery's own data does.

A used EV listing will quote a rated range, but that figure describes the car when it was new, not as it is today. As capacity falls, real-world range falls with it, quietly and without any dashboard drama. A car advertised on its original range may deliver noticeably less, and you would only discover the shortfall after the purchase, on a cold morning when you need the distance most.

Worse, the dashboard range estimate adapts to recent driving and can flatter a tired pack. Treating it as a measure of battery health is like judging an engine purely by how smoothly it idles in a car park. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

How we measure battery health

We read the battery's state of health directly through a diagnostic connection, drawing on the data the car records about its own pack rather than the figures it shows the driver. We compare that against what the model should retain for its age and use, look at how the pack is balanced across its cells where the data allows, and check for stored faults in the thermal and charging systems that can accelerate decline.

Charging behaviour is part of the picture too. We assess how the car takes a charge and look for evidence of throttling or errors under rapid charging, because a pack that cannot fast-charge cleanly is signalling trouble that range figures will never reveal. Together, this builds a far more honest valuation than any listing can offer.

Reading degradation in context

Some degradation is entirely normal and no cause for concern. A few years of use will trim a small percentage from any battery, and a car at a healthy state of health, priced accordingly, can be an excellent purchase. The aim of the check is not to reject every car with any wear, but to know exactly where a given pack stands and to make sure the price reflects it.

Where a battery check earns its keep is in catching the outliers: the car whose pack has aged far faster than its mileage suggests, the early model whose passive cooling has taken a toll, the example that hides its decline behind an optimistic range readout. Find those before you buy, and the used-EV market opens up safely. Skip the check, and you are trusting the most expensive part of the car to luck.

Frequent rapid charging, regularly running the pack to very high or very low states of charge, and a lot of life in hot conditions all tend to wear a battery faster. A car that has lived gently will usually have aged more gracefully than its mileage alone suggests.

Cooling matters enormously too. Cars with active thermal management generally protect their batteries better than early designs that relied on passive cooling, which is why those earlier EVs deserve particular scrutiny. Many electric cars carry a separate, longer warranty on the battery than on the rest of the vehicle, and where one still applies it can transform the risk of a used purchase. Buying a used electric car well means thinking about the battery not just today but across the years you intend to keep it. A pack in good health now will continue its slow, predictable decline, and a sensible buyer factors that gentle trajectory into their plans rather than expecting the figure to hold still. Knowing where the battery starts lets you anticipate where it will be.

This longer view also informs how much to pay. A car whose battery is strong has more useful life ahead and is worth more for it; one already showing significant wear is closer to the point where range becomes a daily compromise.
