Mention a diagnostic scan and many buyers picture a magic box that declares a car good or bad. The reality is more useful and more nuanced. On-board diagnostics — OBD — is the system through which a modern car continuously monitors its own engine, emissions and electronic systems, recording faults as numbered codes.
