The trade-off is that all those internal springs, friction elements and damping grease wear out over time. The symptoms of a failing flywheel
The classic sign is a rattle or chatter at idle that changes when the clutch pedal is pressed. With the engine running in neutral, a worn flywheel rattles or knocks, and the moment the clutch is depressed the noise typically disappears or changes character, because pressing the pedal alters the load on the worn springs. A solid flywheel does not behave this way, which makes this the single most telling check.
There are other signs too. A distinct knock or clunk as the engine is switched off, or when the revs drop suddenly below idle, comes from the two masses slapping together through worn spring travel. Vibration through the clutch pedal, gear lever and seat at idle is common, and a worn flywheel can cause a shudder when pulling away gently. It can even mimic a misfire or a rough, surging idle, although the engine itself is healthy.
Clutch slip — the related fault
The clutch is a separate component, but it is so often worn alongside the flywheel that the two are checked together. The defining symptom of a slipping clutch is engine revs climbing faster than road speed under load — accelerating firmly in a high gear, pulling away uphill or towing — because the friction plate is glazed or worn and can no longer hold. A smell like burnt friction material after a hill start or stop-start crawling confirms it.
A biting point high up the pedal travel, where the clutch only engages near the top, points the same way.
